Oral Sedation vs. Nitrous Oxide: What’s the Difference?
Roy & Kali Family Dental Centre in Grande Prairie offers a range of dental sedation options to keep you comfortable while receiving a procedure, even if you have fear or anxiety about having dental work done. Two of the most commonly prescribed sedation methods are oral sedation and nitrous oxide. Here’s what you need to know about when they are used and what to expect.
Oral Sedation
This type of dental sedation includes medications that will help you relax. The effects of oral sedation can easily be adjusted from mild to moderate as required for the procedure and individual patient. The most common prescription given is Triazolam, which is similar to Valium. The pill is taken about an hour before the procedure and will likely leave you feeling drowsy, but awake and relaxed. With moderate levels of oral sedation, you may tend to feel sleepy.
Nitrous Oxide
Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a blend of nitrogen and oxygen that is given through a mask placed over the patient’s nose and mouth. This effective method of dental sedation is safe enough for pediatric use. You’ll remain conscious during the procedure and will be able to speak and move normally. The effects of the gas are mild, and it leaves the body quickly once the mask is removed, meaning you’ll be able to drive home and return to normal activities immediately after the procedure.
In addition to dental sedation, you’ll also receive an anesthetic injection that will numb the affected area.
